Went on a trip to Malacca with several friends for a one-and-a-half day for foooood on Monday! (15th Oct '07)
First off, we had Chicken Rice Ball for lunch somewhere in Jonkers Street at 12pm, which, there was already a queue outside. As we finally got a table and sat down to order, someone commented, "nowadays the rice balls were now being made using machines, doesn't taste as nice as the 'hand made' ones," to which I jokingly replied, "It tastes better cause got "ka liu" from the restaurant workers hands."
The architecture of the restaurant we went to was quite interesting, which had an outer square structure where customers sat and ate, while the middle was an open air area with a little garden, reminiscient of old Chinese architecture, and the doorways inside didn't have doors as far as I could see, which implied feng shui practices. And they certainly seemed to be doing good business.
After stuffing our faces with the food, we headed to Liang's house to rest and let the food digest abit. He had a really cute, quirky doggy called Lucky. It kept pawing at the grille and anything you put near it (like your hand), and when it was intrigued, it would lift one paw up and stare. Needless to say, we spent quite some
time teasing it. =P
Later at around 4pm, we ventured out again to eat pork satay. The restaurant was located at one end of a row of shophouses, and the strange thing is that the restaurant was the only shop open along that road. Despite this, there were quite alot of people eating there too. Suffice to say, the satays were flying off the grille to keep the customers constantly supplied. The satay itself was pretty nice, I left behind a small pile of fat and charred bits (carcinogens are bad for you). We sampled some of the chicken satay as well, pretty good stuff, tho the pork satay was more "heong". The sauce was really nice as well, and they added sesame seeds in it too. All in all I whacked 19 sticks.
Later, we joined several more friends to have ikan bakar for dinner, which was in some 'ulu' place next to what looked like a freshwater swamp that had some sampans docked at a wooden jetty (and if the selection of fish at the restaurant is any indication).
We had grilled chili siakap, fried squid and stingray there (mmmm!), which was quite cheap as well. The drinks on the other hand were another matter. I had ordered milo ais kosong, and I took a couple of sips before I happened to look into the cup. I noticed some black things floating inside, and at first I thought they were just bits of undissolved milo, but upon closer inspection, they were little black ants.
I *almost* swallowed a whole colony of ants there. -_-;; Amy also blogged about another interesting 'event' there, lol.
After the meal, we proceeded to a cafe (Melaka has TONS of cafes...) called More Cafe to chill out and have fun just chatting and playing "chor dai di", after which we went back to Liang's place for the night, but continued chatting till 3am.
The next morning we went to a coffeeshop for taiwanese noodles, after which we took a walk around the Mahkota Parade shopping complex. Even in Melaka you can see quite alot of "la la" people, aka Walking Fashion Disasters.
To conclude our eating trip, we had laksa and cendol/ais kacang at a quaint little shop. There was so much gula melaka on top of the cendol that I thought it was chocolate at first!
The shop had all sorts of memorabilia and antique stuff for decor. There was even a grimy portrait of Mona Lisa above our table, and a huge poster of Bruce Lee hanging below it, and a display case of antique vases, some replicas.
After stuffing our faces there too, we finally left for KL at around 3pm.
Finally, i'd like to apologise for the lack of pictures, as I forgot to bring my camera along, but i'm planning to make another trip down there again sometime, both to makan again as well as go sightseeing.
